Vancouver Photographer , Dave M. Trace grew up as the youngest of seven siblings, born in Kitsilano area of Vancouver in 1962. Early on, his love of photography was obvious. This is because, ever since he was a child, Dave always had a camera in his hand. From his first Photo-Chemistry course back in Grade 8 , his instructor said "David has a keen photographic eye". When he wasn't out kicking a soccer ball around or playing street hockey, Dave often spent time after school in the Darkroom. He was always helpful teaching others students how to use the Darkroom techniques especially the girls, as this all came very naturally to him. Always trying too create weird images in the darkroom from normal media. He printed over 3/4 of his schools Grade 10 annual as well as submitting 20 or so photos in it. After leaving high school, Dave moved out on his own at age 17. He started working full-time on a graveyard shift at a local union factory. He quit his job at 22 after 5 1/2 years at his high paying union job. Stating he wanted to pursue a career in Photography. He soon met with a friend from school and starting photographing his band Simon Kaos at their live gigs and printing color enlargements for sale at their shows. Soon afterwards, he was photographing such Canadian Bands as, Headpins, Idle Eyes, Honeymoon Suite. Local Models and Dancers were not paying the rent, for this hard starved artist from Kisilano. His friends often joked how this bachelors fridge would have a few condiments, no food, a few beer, and 8 to 10 rolls of color and B&W film in the egg container of the fridge door, but no eggs. But hey he's living just 2 blocks from Kits Beach so life must be good. No so, the love affair with camera and late nights hanging out with rock bands weren't paying the bills. So back to full-time union factory work once again. All the while still determined to make a go at his career dream. Traditional methods of photography have always been avoided by Dave. " I feel they are important, but I wanted to" live outside the box", Dave recalls. "If I were to do it again, I might have remained in school". However, photographing live bands was his forte, his creativity and originality quickly gained him notoriety as his unique style was breathtaking, and easily recognizable as his.
Dave avoided being pigeoned holed and working as a staff photographer for a 9-5 newspaper job. He has always chosen to remain an independent Freelance Photographer.
